Count Your Blessings
Many times we forget…
Forget how lucky we are to live in a country where financial assistance
is available for end stage renal disease;
Forget how fortunate we are to live in Alabama, where one of the
finest hospitals in the world for kidney transplantation (UAB)
exists, along with one of the best organ procurement centers in
the United States; special thanks to Dr. Arnold G. Diethelm for
both;
Forget the encouraging visit we received from a kidney transplant
recipient (a member of the Kidney Care Team) while we were in
the hospital;
We may forget from time to time to count our blessings, but we
can still do something to give back!
If you would like to give something back in thanks for the blessing
of your kidney, here are some ways to do so:
· Become a member of the Kidney Care Team. Make personal
calls on transplant recipients in the hospital, deliver an educational
and fun goody bag, answer any questions they may have, and let
them know how wonderful it is to be well again!
· Join us for monthly support group meetings for transplant
recipients, dialysis patients or anyone suffering from kidney
disease. Enjoy fellowship, get valuable information from guest
speakers and talk to others who have experienced what you have.
· Volunteer your services in the office working on mail
outs, putting together patient goody bags or manning a display
booth at health fairs.
· Volunteer at one of the Foundation’s two main
annual events: the Patient Education Conference in the fall and
the annual Walk-A-Thon in the spring. Serve on a planning committee
or of help the day of the event.
Please give some real thought to giving back the gift of life
you received. Believe me, it will be very rewarding. The Alabama
Kidney Foundation needs your help and the patients we serve need
you too.
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for everyone,
not just transplant recipients! Call (205) 934-2111 or (800) 750-3331
for details about additional volunteer opportunities or to be
added to our volunteer email/mailing list.
With five volunteer districts around the state, the opportunities
are endless!
